Understanding Opening Protection Ratings on the Uniform Mitigation Verification Inspection Form “1802"

Modified on Tue, 10 Dec, 2024 at 9:49 AM

Opening Protection pertains to exterior doors, garage doors, windows, glass blocks, and skylights. Detailed information regarding the current rating of openings in the household can be reviewed on the initial inspection report in Section 7 of the "Uniform Mitigation Verification Inspection Form" or "1802".

There are generally three levels of possible credit for this segment of the inspection:

  1. The highest level of credit is when ALL openings are Large Missile Impact Rated (Level A.1). This means all doors, windows, garage doors, skylights, glass block, etc. are all
protected by, or are rated at, the highest level.
  2. Since this is not required by code in all jurisdictions, a home may qualify for the second level (Level A.2) which is where all glazed openings are Large Missile Impact Rated (or protected by products that qualify as such) but all solid entry doors and garage door are verified to be wind and pressure rated. This may be likely if the home was built after 2002 and in an area that does not require impact doors.
  3. The third option is when all glazed openings (openings in home that contain glass) are Large Missile Impact Rated (or protected by products that qualify as such) and all solid doors and garage door cannot be identified to be wind and pressure rated (Level A.3)

Most insurance agencies only require a level of A3 for insurance discounts. Homeowners are encouraged to contact the insurance company directly to discuss opening protection requirements and potential discounts before starting the improvements.
